The Algoway {2} was constructed as a self-unloading River-Class bulk carrier for the Algoma Central Railway Marine Division, later Algoma Central Corporation.
The Algoway was laid down on January 5, 1972, being launched on June 23, and sailing on her maiden voyage on September 21, 1972. She spent her years on the lakes carrying cargoes of ore, coal, stone, sand, grain, and salt to various ports.
In 1993, management was taken over by Seaway Self-Unloaders, later Seaway Marine Transports, a partnership between Algoma Central Corporation and Upper Lakes Shipping to maximize efficiency and profits. This ended in 2011 when Algoma purchased Upper Lakes Shipping and absorbed their vessels into the Algoma fleet.
The Algoway laid up on January 1, 2018 at Goderich, Ontario, for the final time. Her role in the fleet was being taken over by newer and more modern ships. She was sold for scrap in spring 2018, being towed out of Goderich on June 9, 2018. The Algoway arrived at the International Marine Salvage scrapyard in Port Colborne on June 9th for scrapping. She was scrapped over 2019-2020.
